My HBS SVMP Experience
I had the incredible privilege of attending the Harvard Business School Summer Venture in Management Program, an experience that has truly transformed my mindset, network, and approach to learning. From meeting brilliant individuals from diverse backgrounds to engaging with passionate professors, my time at HBS was an invaluable learning journey.
Allow me to share my key takeaways from this enriching week:
The Case Method: Without a doubt, the most exciting learning approach I have ever encountered. The case method challenged me to think outside the box, articulate my thoughts effectively, adapt my thinking, become a better conversationalist, and explore subjects beyond my usual domain of knowledge. It was akin to the Ancient Agora in Ancient Greek society, where intellectuals gathered to discuss thought-provoking matters. To actively participate in enlightening conversations, I delved deep into every case, stumbling upon new concepts that piqued my curiosity, prompting me to explore them further. This immersive method allowed me to put myself in the shoes of the case's protagonist, providing a simulation of the high-stakes decision-making involved.
No Right Way: As I reflect on mapping out my career path in recent months, I've come to realize that uncertainty lies in the journey, not the ultimate destination. While my lifelong goal remains constant, I learned that pursuing happiness, fulfillment, and curiosity is what brings us closer to our purpose or long-term goals. Embracing the ups and downs that come with the journey, with moments of reflection along the way, is crucial.
People, People, People: People are the driving force behind our world. In numerous case studies, the human factor played a vital role in the success of nations, corporations, personal livelihoods, and nonprofits. I gained a profound understanding of the importance of putting people first, especially through the inspiring Heidi Roizen and Toto Wolff case studies. Connecting with individuals who surpass me in intelligence allowed me to put my knowledge to use while prioritizing people in all future endeavors.
Keep Shooting Your Shot: Applying to the HBS SVMP program was a leap of faith, an act of shooting my shot. I had no idea whether I would be selected among the thousands of applicants. Only 180 students were chosen nationwide. In the past, I have faced instant rejections from other programs. However, I have come to understand that life is a mixture of victories and setbacks. It's essential to approach opportunities with confidence, knowing that some will be missed. This perspective adds a sense of excitement to the overall experience.
Speaking of taking chances, I want to give a shoutout to Dev Patel for helping me improve my jump shot.
Your Circle Matters: Surrounding myself with intellectual minds has motivated me to constantly push my boundaries. For the first time, I found myself in a circle where working at big tech companies, big 4 firms, startups, and starting a business was the norm. As a self-proclaimed "big nerd," with interests in startups, business, tech, psychology, community impact, history, and philosophy, I felt that all my nerdy passions were catered to. Engaging in conversations on these diverse topics, I even connected with like-minded individuals who are keen to collaborate on future startup ideas. The intellectually stimulating and exciting atmosphere made this experience truly remarkable.
